How Can You Help Students With Emotional Needs?

26th October 2021

One of the most common problems parents face with their children is their low level of performance in studies. Even after receiving the proper teaching facilities, enough attention, and study materials some students find it pretty hard to adjust to the education format.

It has been observed that students who are unable to perform in the classroom sessions irrespective of the exact amount of training suffer from learning disabilities. Children with learning disabilities lag behind their classmates if the problem is not being detected.

That is one of the major reasons why special education courses (SEN) for teachers are stealing the limelight these days. These SEN courses for teachers enable the tutors to learn facts about children with special abilities. Cases of autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety syndrome, and so on are discussed in these courses.

These are sensitive scenarios where the tutors must handle the students delicately. A regular teachers-parents session must be arranged so that no communication gap becomes an obstruction in a special child's path of progress. Learning disabilities courses for teachers are often online courses and can be pursued from any part of the world.

With the help of this special education program, the SEN educators work with children with utmost perfection. They teach children, keeping in mind the grounds where they get stuck.

Problems faced by children with learning disabilities:

The issue might seem trivial initially but as days pass by, children with LD tend to become restless and lose their focus. Parents emphasize the poor performance of children having LD. What they usually overlook is the emotional instability that grows in the children due to these problems.

Children become gloomy when they notice that their peers are performing better than them. The school environment can sometimes adversely affect their emotional state if the problem is not being diagnosed. The super-fast competition among classmates can demotivate them to a great extent when their scorecard shows a poor score, unlike the others.

The learning disabilities courses for teachers provide teaching methods to the educators where they know about tons of difficulties faced by the children with LD. Besides, supporting these kids emotionally is another integral part of the special education courses.

These are the certain problems which these kids encounter:

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Acting out weirdly
  • Doomed self-esteem
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Restlessness
  • Lack of enthusiasm
  • Demotivation

Apart from the emotional aspect, physical problems like constant headaches, stomach aches, fever, mild panic attacks, etc. are results of learning disabilities.

Special education educators deal with each of these problems and reach a solution with a specific goal. They aim at coming up with feasible and interesting techniques that will encourage the students to take part in the classroom activities. This in turn will boost up their motivation and they can perform better than anyone else, if not lesser.

How to support the emotional needs of children with LD:

This indeed is a hard nut to crack. Dealing with the emotional grounds of these children is never a piece of cake. The problems which the kids with LD incur are extremely sensitive. Explaining them in common terms is not going to crack the jackpot.

Well, the best part is with proper training, the special education teachers can take care of the emotional needs of these children perfectly. No sweat!

Problem 1: The children often feel that they are half-baked. Sometimes, kids with learning disabilities notice that they're unable to solve a mathematical problem or any other classroom assignment that is being easily solved by the rest of the class. This brings down their level of confidence to the ground level.

The best way to eradicate this feeling of sorrow is by directly talking to the students and with the parents. Learning disabilities can be genetic by nature. In such a scenario, the parents must explain to the kids that problem is nothing to worry out. They must give assurance to the children that they have also once upon a time struggled with this problem.

The parents can narrate to the children the stories about how they have conquered their phase of struggle without giving up. The tutors, on the other hand, can teach them interesting methods of learning. Together, they both can contribute genuinely to help the children not losing their focus.

Problem 2: Learning disabilities make children feel like fish out of water. They tend to feel that they are not receiving enough amount of appreciation like the other students. This will hit their self-esteem as a yorker ball does to the wickets.

In this case, the parents must speak with the teachers. If required, a shadow teacher can be appointed who can deal with such students one on one. A shadow educator's biggest USP is that he/she can give 100% assistance to the children who are encountering learning disabilities.

A regular basis of communication between the shadow teacher and the parents has been found out to be of immense help.  Once the children being to receive appreciation from the tutors, their self-esteem, motivation level, and enthusiasm to actively participate in classroom programs bounce back.

Problem 3: Kids with LD work harder than their classmates. They have to put extra effort into home tasks, attend regular sessions with special education teachers, and spend a huge amount of time keeping themselves up to date with the academics.  This makes them feel exhausted.

The best kind of solution to this problem will be creating goals for the children that are not much difficult to achieve.  Having the missions set and the proper encouragement being received, the children tend to work smoothly on their difficulties. Once the mission is accomplished, they feel stress-free.

The tutor and the parents must figure out what the students excel at. A child with LD can be a spectacular painter. He/she can really be an awesome singer. Once the hidden talents are being discovered, it becomes easier for the teachers to derive methods blended perfectly for the child's development.

Problem 4: Not all teachers can be equally attentive towards children having learning disabilities. Also, a single teacher cannot always remain fully conscious of these kids. This often results in the weird behavioral patterns of the children.

Several symptoms are being observed in the behavioral pattern of the children with LD. Their behavior is the consequence of not being paid enough attention to. They tend to misbehave with their classmates. Besides, they often involve themselves in physical violence.

It has been noticed that such children with an attitude problem deny cooperating with the teachers concerning academic learning. Over here, the teacher can ask them to spend only 15 minutes with the lesson program and can gradually increase the duration. Thus, the patience level of the students will be restored.

The behavioral pattern can be changed thoroughly by using some constructive processes. The teachers can propose a suggestion stating that if students (with LD) do not involve themselves in physical violence for successive 2 days they will be rewarded. The students will begin to realize that if they do not fight, the ambiance remains peaceful. On one fine day, they’ll give up being violent.

To end with:

The emotional segment of a child with learning disabilities is stupendously sensitive. The parents have to move on from the social stigma that children with LD can never perform like others. They have to make sure that these kids do not give up on themselves and rather must help them to bounce to the mainstream model.
